어떤 도시의 교량 미관기준을 잡는데 가장 어려웠던 점은 수심 2미터의 노년기 지형 하천에 현수교를 걸어야 하겠다는 의지를 극복하는 것이었다. 현수교가 걸려야 하는 이유는 외국에 가서 보니 멋있었고 그래서 그것이 그 도시의 랜드마크로서 관광자원이었기 때문이란다. 도저히 교각을 세울 수 없는 극한 상황에서 이를 극복하기 위한 엔지니어링의 필사적인 노력의 결과물이 그 모습을 만들었음은 알고싶지도 않은 주체들이었다.
이런 디자인은 결국 조형적 피해의식이 가득한 엔지니어와 엔지니어링의 철학이 전무한 시각디자이너들 사이의 진공상태가 만들어낸 결과물이다. 그리고 어줍잖게 그림엽서와 관광버스를 통해 바깥 세상을 경험한 공무원들의 의지가 여기 더해졌을 것이고. 이런 무지에 의해 희생되는 것은 국토고 얻는 것은 우리 시대의 오명이다. 오늘, 슬픈 날이다.
